British and American Odds: How to Convert Them Into Decimal?
In the lines of bookmakers, decimal coefficients are proposed, which the beginner is easier to understand. Take the value, multiply it by the amount of the bet – and voila, you got a potential payout. To find out the net profit, it is necessary to take the amount of the bet from the payment. Another of their names is European. Look like this – 2. 30.
Example calculation. A person wants to put 100 dollars for an event, which the office gives for 2. 30. If successful, the winnings will be:
100 * 2. 30 = 230
The bookmaker will write off 100 conventional units from the account when placing a bet and, if you are lucky, will pay 230 dollars after the game. At the same time, your net profit will be 130.
The decimal factor, because of its simplicity, has spread to the countries of the former USSR, is used in Asia and Europe, except for Ireland, Britain and its former colonies.
American coefficient
For our brother this format is the most difficult to understand. Unlike those described above, some fractions are not used here, but US coefficients can be positive and negative. Thanks to this you will quickly understand who is considered the favorite in the pair. It looks like this – +100 or -150.
It is better to start immediately with clear examples of calculation. Suppose you want to support the favorite team with money. Opposite it we see a completely incomprehensible figure -350. It means that to get a net profit of 100 monetary units you must risk $350.
But what if you decided to “download” a duel to an outsider, and the coefficient for it is +800? This means that at a bet of 100 monetary units you will receive 800 dollars of profit.
- We make dozens of free sports predictions every day.
We can formulate the definition as follows:
- if there is a plus before the number, then it corresponds to the net profit that you can get at a bet of 100 units;
- if there is a minus before the number, then it corresponds to the amount that you have to put in order to get a net profit of 100 units.

British coefficient (fractional)
As with the outlet or currency, the British seem to be vital to be different from the rest. Here and in the question of the format of the coefficients, they do everything in their own way. The British coefficient is also known as fractional. Strictly speaking, the decimal coefficient is also a fraction. But unlike him, English – this is a simple fraction. It looks like this – 2/11.
Let us turn to the examples of calculation. For example, one of the teams with a high probability of winning in the upcoming match. We want to seduce her with a victory for 2/11. It is necessary to understand this in the following way: to get a net profit of $2, you need to put 11 conventional units. The amount of payment will be the same 13 dollars.
- New predictions for soccer, tennis, hockey, basketball, etc. are created every hour.
Another example. We have an unlikely outcome with a coefficient of 3/1. How much should you put in order to make a net profit of 3000 dollars? With odds of 3/1 – you must make a bet of $ 1000. The total payment, if the bet wins, will be 4 thousand dollars.
Another case. You have a hundred that you want to bet, and a coefficient of 6/4. How to understand how much you will win? Here comes in handy simple formula:
- Take a look at the freebets offered by the bookmaker.
6/4 x 100 = $150
So much will make a net profit, and the total payment will be equal to 250 dollars.
Now let’s summarize. The fractional coefficient, which is British, has the form of a simple fraction, the denominator of which indicates the number of monetary units that must be put in order to win the amount indicated in the numerator.
How to convert fractional and American odds into a normal decimal?
It will be better to consider separately conversion of each of the formats in the familiar to us. We will give formulas and examples of conversion.

From British to Decimal
To get a decimal factor from a fractional one, the numerator should be divided into a denominator and one added.
For example, we have a coefficient of 2/15. We perform the action:
2/15 + 1 = 0. 13 + 1 = 1.13
And what if we have a large numerator, and the denominator is equal to one? Nothing changes. Example with a factor of 100/1:
100/1 + 1 = 100 + 1 = 101.0
From American to Decimal
In this case, the order of conversion depends on whether the coefficient is positive or negative.
If with the plus sign, then we add to its value of 100 and divide the sum by 100.
If negative, then take its value, add 100 and divide the sum by its value. In doing so, we use the coefficient value in the calculations as a positive number.
Let’s convert the American coefficient +1500 into a decimal format:
(1500 + 100) / 100 = 1600/100 = 16.0
Now calculate the European coefficient for the American -400:
(400 + 100) / 400 = 500/400 = 1.25
