History
In the early 1990s, the Sports Council of the Madrid Community supported the city’s bid to host the World Athletics Championships in 1997, and preparations began for an Olympic stadium in eastern Madrid, next to the M-40 Motorway. The site was expected to be heavily urbanized.
The construction of the new stadium began in 1990 and was based on a project proposed by Cruz y Ortiz. It was completed in 1993, and the inauguration took place in September 1994. The oval-shaped stadium with a one-sided arrangement, designed for 20,000 seats, was called La Peineta (comb) because of its similarity to the traditional Spanish hair comb.

The 1997 World Championships in Athletics were eventually awarded to Athens, and La Peineta was used for small sports and cultural events during the first decade of its existence. It became an abandoned stadium in 2004.
New stadium
In 2004, the stadium was closed for a future project after the Madrid bid for the 2016 Summer Olympics. Following the defeat of the Madrid application in 2009, many proposals were made regarding the future use of the stadium. Finally, on September 11, 2013, Atletico Madrid announced plans to build a stadium on the site of La Paineta. Thus, ownership was officially transferred to the club.

The new stadium was supposed to replace the Vicente Calderon stadium as Atlético’s home, starting in the 2017–18 season. On December 9, 2016, the club announced that the official name for the refurbished stadium would be Wanda Metropolitano — Wanda for sponsorship reasons and the Metropolitano after the arena of 1923-1966, which hosted the matches of Atletico to Vicente Calderon.
On September 17, 2017, the first Wanda Metropolitano event was the 2017–18 La Liga match between Atletico Madrid and Málaga. King of Spain Felipe VI took part in the match. Antoine Griezmann of Atlético scored the first goal at the new stadium, where the match ended with Atlético’s victory 1-0. On September 27, 2017, Wanda Metropolitano held its first UEFA Champions League game. Chelsea beat Atletico Madrid 2-1, becoming the first English club to win at home in any European club tournament, and the first guest team to win at the new stadium.
