Best Seats for Great Views of the Field at Nationals Park

With the upper deck (also known as the Gallery and Upper Gallery) providing more of a birds eye perspective for a ballgame at Nationals Park, we recommend sticking to the 100 and 200 levels when searching for good all around views of the field during a Nats game.

Some of the best options are found in the middle rows of the lower 100 level sections closest to the dugouts. Sit too low and it can be difficult to pick up all the details, but if you go too high you miss out on the excitement of being close to the field. Rows N-Z and AA-GG give a perfect blend of ideal viewing height and close proximity to the diamond.

Sections 129-132 keep you closer to the Nats dugout on the first base side, but from here you are likely to see more sun during a day game. On the third base side, sections 113-116 are closer to the visitor dugout and will get the sun at their back sooner. Sit closer to the outside edge of the infield, especially sections 113-114 and 131-132, to avoid the protective netting.

Many fans love the views from behind home plate at a baseball game, and you can find excellent ones in the front rows of sections 120-121 and 124-125 at Nationals Park. These seats have impressive proximity to home plate and the on deck circles, and you’ll be able to pick up the break on the pitches with ease.

Rows A-H here are also a part of the PNC Diamond Club, which allows you to order food and beverage right from your seats rather than having to miss the action on the field during a trip to the concourse. We recommend avoiding these rows in sections 122 and 123 as there is a railing on the home plate side of the section which creates an awful viewing obstruction.

The second tier of seating at Nationals Park has a great perspective thanks to the perfect viewing height just above the 100 level sections, and seats closer to the infield don’t leave you feeling far at all. Sections 206-211 are great choices when sitting in rows C and higher as you will be clear of the safety railing at the front of the sections.

Seats here also put the sun at your back sooner, while fans on the first base side have the sun in their eyes for a longer chunk of the game. These club seats don’t come with in-seat wait service, but the smaller seating sections and private concourse help keep lines to a minimum for quicker trips away from the game.

Most of the recommendations above will come with a higher price tag due to the desirable positioning of the seats, but if you’re looking for a cheaper option, consider seats in rows C-H of sections 202 and 203. You’ll be at that great second tier seating height for a Nats game, and these seats also have a good angle into the infield.

Similar options down the right field line wrap closer to the foul pole creating extremely difficult views of the right field corner, but as these left field options swing out wider in the stadium, you maintain a surprisingly good view to almost all areas of the field. From this position you also get the sun at your back sooner, rather than having to fight through the glaring shine to follow the game.

Where to eat?

Where are you eating and drinking around Nationals Park this season? The good news: there are more options than ever, whether you’re looking for great places to drink outside, happy hour deals, quick bites, or a nice sit-down meal. The even better news: you have a full season ahead to try them all.

All-Purpose

79 Potomac Ave., SE

A second location of chef Michael Friedman’s uber-popular pizzeria promises to be a great addition to the Nats Park dining and drinking scene. Expect the same deck-oven pies with creative Italian-American toppings, like the Rockaway with clams and smoky bacon. There’s also more seafood antipasti to fit the riverfront location, as well as water ice-inspired cocktails and a big patio to enjoy them on. (A roof deck will open this summer).

Chloe

1331 Fourth St., SE

There’s plenty of tasty eats at this eclectic new American restaurant from chef Haidar Karoum, especially if you want something a little nicer than your average wings and beer–think seafood gumbo alongside house-made Bavarian sausages.

Aslin Beer Garden

1299 First St., SE

This startup micro-brewery out of Herndon, Virginia has already won over beer nerds, so we imagine its first DC pop-up garden will be popular. The outdoor space will be open only on game days to start (roughly two hours prior to two hours after) with expanded hours starting in May.

Morini Piccolo

Anacostia River Walk Trail

Frozen negronis, gelato ice cream sandwiches, and melty paninis are just a few things you’ll find at the new Italian boardwalk-inspired pop-up by Osteria Morini. The counter-order stand will have tables on the dock near the restaurant and opens on April 7 for weekends (Friday through Sunday) and home game days going forward.

Declaration

1237 First St., SE

The second pizzeria from DC’s presidentially themed restaurant group is even bigger than the Shaw original with 100 seats and a walk-up outdoor bar. The menu is also bigger with regional American eats like Philly-style cheesesteaks in addition to thin-crust pies.

Ana at District Winery

385 Water St., SE

DC’s first “urban winery” has a tasting counter and outdoor patio for those who want to sip vino—including the first District-made rosé. The airy New American restaurant serves wine-friendly dishes.

Great Bars and Beer Gardens

The Bullpen

1299 Half St., SE

Just steps from the main entrance, this open-air bar is home base for Nats fans. Back for its tenth season, you’ll find the same easy-drinking tallboy beers and Red Bull-vodka slushies from multiple bars—plus food trucks, corn hole, and live music. The bar is open at least two hours before home game days, with a 3rd to 7th inning happy hour where all drinks are $5.

Bardo Riverfront

25 Potomac Ave., SE

This massive brewery and beer garden perched on the Anacostia River is a quick walk to the south entrances at Nats Park. Fans will find seats for 750 over two acres, a dog park, ample bicycle parking, food trucks, and of course, plenty of fresh beer.

Bluejacket Brewery

300 Tingey St., SE

If you prefer a fresh-brewed German-style pilsner over Bud Light, this brewery/bar/restaurant is your place. An outdoor grill launches for the Nats home opener and runs through the season, with a special menu of eats like burgers (beef and falafel), smoked mumbo ribs, and “boozy” wings. Plus, now you can get cans at the “bottle shop” next door.

Due South and Due South Dockside

301 Water St., SE

The bar area of this Southern-leaning barbecue spot packs them in on game days for beers, brown booze, and eats like pulled pork nachos. Its satellite outdoor bar on the waterfront pier is open on home game days with a full bar and more snacks.

Justin’s Cafe

1025 First St., SE

This popular, no-frills neighborhood bar/restaurant is typically bustling with fans before or after games. Even without a ticket you can catch the game on five flat-screen televisions. A “progressive” happy hour runs Monday through Friday, 4 to 8 pm, starting with $3 beers and $4 rails.

The Big Stick Brats & Brew

20 M St., SE

This snazzier sister of Justin’s Cafe is like a ski chalet meets a sports bar. The menu centers around brews that can be ordered in 20-ounce mugs, sausages, and “shotskis” (i.e. shots served on a ski). Happy hour runs Monday through Friday, 3 to 7 PM, as well as every night from 10 PM to close with deals on drinks, apps, and beer-and-shot combos.

The Rosé Garden

301 Water St., SE

Fans can wear red and drink pink at Whaley’s rosé garden (opening mid-April). Go for the blush wines, stay for boozy slushies and a small seafood-centric snack menu.

Best Restaurants

The Salt Line

79 Potomac Ave., SE

Chef Kyle Bailey knocked it out of the park last season with the debut of this New England-inspired seafood spot. (He also serves a mean burger.) This year the team added a new waterfront bar/lounge area and raw bar with fans in mind, which will host oyster and beer events, plus outdoor grilling.

Osteria Morini

301 Water St., SE

Want to escape the crazy pre- and post-game fray? This waterfront Italian restaurant has a spacious bar and dining room–plus on home game days you can get a bowl of pasta and a beer for just $15 at the bar (which also has TVs so you won’t miss the action). The outdoor patio is awesome in warm weather.

Whaley’s

301 Water St., SE

This seafood bar/restaurant serves some of the freshest around, but isn’t too fancy to welcome sports fans. Drop by the U-shaped bar for daily happy hour (5 to 7 PM) for fresh-shucked $1 local oysters—or fried with kimchi mayo ($12)—and a variety of cocktails, beers, and wines.

Quick Bites

Bonchon

1015 Half St., SE

This Korean fried chicken chain double-fries up some of the best wings in town. The Navy Yard location is designed with sports fans in mind, including a 90-seat bar area, many TVs, and a large number of beers.

Takorean

1212 Fourth St., SE

Fast-casual, Korean-style “takos” and bowls topped with kimchi slaw are great for an easy pre-or-post game bite—or take them to-go. There’s also draft beer and sake if you decide to stay.

Shake Shack

54 M St., SE

You don’t need to waste multiple innings waiting in line for your Shack fix inside the stadium now that a branch of the burger joint opened across from the Park.

Ice Cream Jubilee

301 Water St., SE

This local ice cream purveyor serves delicious scoops and sundaes with fun flavors like citrus Sichuan peppercorn and espresso colada. Biscuit purveyor Mason Dixie is also popping up in the shop through June with daily biscuit sandwiches for breakfast and lunch (8 AM to 2 PM).

Taylor Gourmet

1259 First St., SE

Fill up on Philly-style hoagies, chicken cutlet sandwiches, and cheesesteaks to cheer on your DC team at this fast-casual sandwich shop.

Rasa

1247 First St., SE

Indian goes fast-casual in this bright, colorful space where customers can design their own bowls—with plenty of vegetarian options—or opt for house combos like turmeric shrimp with South Indian rice noodles, veggies, and chutneys. Wash it down with mango lassi or a draft gin and tonic.

Design

The Coliseum features an underground design where the playing surface is actually below ground level (21 feet/6 meters below sea level). Consequently, fans entering the stadium find themselves walking on to the main concourse of the stadium at the top of the first level of seats. This, combined with the hill that was built around the stadium to create the upper concourse, means that only the third deck is visible from outside the park. This gives the Coliseum the illusion of being a short stadium from the outside.

Seasons and changes

2009 season

Several ballpark improvement projects were completed by the Nationals during the off-season, including:

  1. Expansion of the Red Porch restaurant in center field to include additional tables on both the concourse and field side. Glass windows on the concourse side were replaced with slidable garage doors, opening to a fenced outdoor patio. On the field side, the rear-most row of Center Field Lounge seats were removed, with an outdoor deck featuring tables and chairs installed in its place. New signage was added on the concourse side.
  2. Installation of three statues in the ballpark honoring Walter Johnson of the original Washington Senators, Frank Howard of the expansion Senators, and Josh Gibson of the Negro League Homestead Grays, which played many of its games in Washington.
  3. A large Washington Nationals hat was added above the entrance to the team store near the center field plaza.
  4. New LED message boards were added over the roof of the Center Field gate, providing information and instructions to fans entering the ballpark.
  5. New advertisement panels were attached to the face of the two garages in center field, with green panels being replaced by white panels. Additional panels showing the team’s 2009 promotions and the current lineup were added to the western garage, facing the plaza.

Concessionaire Levy Restaurants replaced Centerplate as the provider of food and beverage at Nationals Park beginning with the 2009 season.

Before the Nationals 2009 home opener on April 13, 2009 at 3 PM, longtime Philadelphia Phillies announcer Harry Kalas was found unconscious in the Nationals Park press box at 12:20 PM. Kalas was rushed to George Washington University Hospital and pronounced dead at 1:20 PM. A moment of silence was held before the game, followed by both Nationals and Phillies fans applauding Kalas in tribute. The Phillies played with a picture of Kalas in their dugout.

On June 4, 2009, Randy Johnson became the 24th pitcher in MLB history to reach 300 wins when the San Francisco Giants beat the Nationals 5–1 at Nationals Park. The game was scheduled to be played the night before, but was delayed due to heavy rain in the DC-area. On July 4, 2009, Adam Dunn became the 123rd player to hit 300 career home runs. The home run came in the 7th inning in a 5-3 win versus the Atlanta Braves.

2010 season

During the All-Star break, the press box was repainted blue to match the color of the seats. On June 8, 2010, pitcher Stephen Strasburg, called the “most hyped and closely watched pitching prospect in the history of baseball”, made his first major league appearance, starting a game against the Pittsburgh Pirates before a sold-out crowd at Nationals Park. Strasburg pitched 7 innings, giving up two runs and striking out 14 batters, a new team strikeout record.

2011 season

Minor changes prior to the start of the 2011 season include the removal of the party tent on top of the LF parking garage to improve views of the U.S. Capitol from upper sections, chrome baseball decorations adorning the outside the stadium, and various signage and concession changes including the departure of Five Guys. Nationals Park also became home of the D.C. Sports Hall of Fame. In June 2011 four new concession stands opened, owned by Danny Meyer’s Union Square Hospitality Group: Blue Smoke (barbecue), Box Frites (“Belgian-style fries and dipping sauces”), El Verano Taqueria (Mexican) and Shake Shack (hamburgers, hot dogs, frozen custard). The team has also ended Friday night firework shows and fireworks after home runs and team victories.

2012 season

On May 4 for the series against Philadelphia, the Nationals renamed the park “Natitude Park”. This was following their “Take Back the Park” plan, first selling advance tickets to fans in the Washington D.C. area before opening up ticket sales to other states. This marked a shift from recent years where Phillies fans had flooded the park, as the crowd was predominantly Nationals fans and the team took two of three from their division rivals. The Nationals made the playoffs for the first time since relocating to Washington in the 2012 season, with Games 3, 4, and 5 of the 2012 National League Division Series against the St. Louis Cardinals being played in Nationals Park. Washington lost the NLDS three games to two.

2013 season

Team owner Theodore N. Lerner approached D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray and other city officials in mid-July 2013 and asked if the city would pay to have a retractable roof built over Nationals Park. After seeing sketches, Gray rejected the proposal at the same meeting. No cost analyses were done prior to the meeting, although team architects speculated it would cost $300 million. City officials noted that the stadium was not designed for a roof.

2014 season

The Nationals made the playoffs for the second time since arriving in Washington, and Nationals Park hosted Games 1 and 2 of the 2014 National League Division Series. The Nationals lost the series to the San Francisco Giants three games to one.

2015 NHL Winter Classic

On January 1, 2015, Nationals Park hosted the 2015 NHL Winter Classic before a crowd of 42,832 spectators. The Washington Capitals defeated the Chicago Blackhawks 3-2 after former Blackhawk Troy Brouwer scored the go-ahead goal with 13 seconds remaining in regulation play. This made the Capitals only the second home team to win a Winter Classic, and the first to win two Winter Classics, having won in Pittsburgh in 2011.

2015 season

On July 17, 2015, during a regular-season game between the Nationals and the Los Angeles Dodgers, a series of three power outages affected a bank of lights along the park’s third base line. The first power outage, which occurred in the bottom of the 4th inning, resulted in a delay of 1 hour and 22 minutes. Play was later resumed as the pitchers retired the next 5 batters. In the middle of the 5th inning, another power outage occurred, which resulted in a 40-minute delay.

The bottom of the 5th inning was later played; at the end of the inning, a third power outage occurred. Due to the power outages, the game was suspended in the top of the 6th inning, with the Nationals leading the Dodgers 3-2 at that point. The game was resumed the next afternoon, with the Nationals winning against the Dodgers, 5-3.

2016 season

The Nationals made the playoffs for the third time since arriving in Washington, and Nationals Park hosted Games 1, 2, and 5 of the 2016 National League Division Series. The Nationals lost the series to the Los Angeles Dodgers three games to two.

2017 season

Prior to the 2017 season, the Nationals added the MGM National Harbor Dugout Club, named for the nearby Maryland casino which opened in December 2016. These seats were added near the first base dugout, in the approximate location where the tarp was stored in previous seasons. The tarp has been moved to the third-base side.

In late September 2017, a new organ was installed at Nationals Park, fulfilling the Washington Nationals organization’s long-held goal of upgrading the stadium’s organ. The Viscount Sonus 60, priced at $20,000 on European Web sites, was manufactured in Mondaino, Italy, and tuned in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.

It was installed in a former radio booth on the second floor of the stadium’s press box, replacing a less-capable portable Hammond organ that had been located in a corner of the stadium’s sound effects control room. The new location gave the organist a private room for the first time, as well as a better view of the field and crowd.

The Nationals made the playoffs for the fourth time since arriving in Washington, and Nationals Park hosted Games 1, 2, and 5 of the 2017 National League Division Series. The Nationals lost the series to the Chicago Cubs three games to two.

2018 Major League Baseball All-Star Game

Nationals Park hosted the 2018 Major League Baseball All-Star Game on July 17. It was the fifth MLB All-Star Game to be played in Washington, D.C., and the first in Washington since 1969. The American League defeated the National League 2–1 before 43,843 fans.
