Vote of confidence
How to understand “Vote of confidence”?
What does the football term “Vote of confidence” mean?
What characterizes “Vote of confidence” in football?
“Vote of confidence” is often heard in football when a manager is under pressure and facing the sack. If a team is performing badly then the media or the team’s fans may call for the manager to be removed meaning that the chairman of the club has to make a decision: to keep or to fire the manager. If the chairman supports the manager we say that the club has offered them a vote of confidence – the club will stick with them.
However, this phrase ironically does not always guarantee a manager’s job is safe, indeed it is seen as being very bad luck if a manager receives a vote of confidence as more often than not it means that they will be sacked in the very near future.
Example: Many Premier League managers are currently under pressure and are hoping to not receive the dreaded vote of confidence from their chairman in the future.
