Backup
What does the football term “backup” mean?
What characterizes a backup in football?
Backup, also known as substitution, bench players, interchange, or reserves, is the replacement of any player by another, which is recognized as having the same set of skills and playing capacity as the previous player. The substitute player’s name must be provided to the referee earlier than the start of the match. Backups are generally sent to replace a player who has become tired or injured, or who is performing poorly, or for tactical reasons (such as bringing a striker on in place of a defender).
