Everything you should know about BASE jumping
BASE jumping is one of the most dangerous types of parachuting sport because the starting points are located quite close to the ground. A BASE jumper must have a lot of experience in parachuting and stable psyche. What else should you know about BASE jumping?
What is the “BASE”?
“BASE” is an abbreviation that stands for “Building”, “Antenna”, “Span” and “Earth”. The height of these objects ranges from 40 to 1000 meters. This is what jumps start from. Jumpers open their parachutes after 5 seconds of free falling. The lower an object, the more dangerous a jump is, this is why jumps from 40 meters’ objects are recommender for professionals only.
Differences between parachuting and BASE jumping
Although BASE jumping evolved from parachuting, these disciplines have very little in common. While parachuting jumps start from objects that are moving at the height of 1000 meters and more, BASE jumps start from stable objects. Usually the height of the starting point is approximately 600 meters. Parachuting gives more opportunities to control the movement of the aircraft because sportsmen spend more time in the air, whereas the duration of BASE jumps is so small that it is easy to lose control of the aircraft.
Another difference is concerned with landing points. In parachuting, landing area is quite big and in case of some problems landing in a different place will not cause serious problems. As for BASE jumping, landing area is restricted and it is necessary to operate the aircraft accurately to prevent injuries. Finally, BASE jumping is a psychologically challenging sport while in parachuting sportsmen’s physical condition and abilities of controlling the aircraft play a bigger role.
Equipment
BASE-jumping is one of the cheapest types of parachuting sport since it does not require airplanes and helicopters to get to the starting point of the jump. Usually jumpers get there on their own or with the help of available means of transportation. Still, special equipment is needed. It consists of:
- A main parachute made of 7 sections (it must open as fast as possible);
- A backpack for a parachute (it is chosen in accordance with the size of aircraft and height of the sportsmen);
- An anemometer (this device is used to measure the speed of wind);
In additional, it is important to wear proper ammunition which includes a helmet, a pair of glasses and a pair of comfortable sneakers with thick soles. As for protection, knee and elbow pads are required.
