Turnover margin
A team’s “turnover margin” in American football is the sum of its forced turnovers minus its committed turnovers. Each time one football team’s player loses control of the ball while carrying it—either because the defence intercepts the pass or because of a fumble—the other team in the game gains possession of the ball.

One key indicator of a football team’s performance is their turnover margin. Because it shows that the team is good at both gaining and keeping possession of the ball, a positive turnover margin (more forced turnovers than committed) usually signifies a greater team performance. On the other hand, if the team is committing more turnovers than they are forcing, it could indicate that they are suffering. This is because more turnovers mean more scoring opportunities for the other side.
Turnover margin is a popular metric among coaches and analysts due to the importance of turnover control in game strategy and team performance.
