Basic spot
What is basic spot in football?
The basic spot determines the point of the foul that ended the running play. Most leagues consider it as the start point for penalty enforcement. It may be the point of snap for simultaneous fouls with the free kick or snap. The same point may be the basic spot for any foul during loose ball play. There are two exceptions to that rule: roughing the passer and fouls in the process of scrimmage kicks.
Most unsportsmanlike fouls move the basic spot to the potential snap point. The same decision the official implies for the non-player fouls without regard to the moment they happened. Dead ball or the touchback result needs the potential place of snap as the basic spot.
