NHL Assistant Coach is a type of coach that works alongside the head coach on the bench during games, in practices and in other capacities and is usually focused on one part of the team such as the defence or special teams.
Assistant coaches provide an important role to the head coach who is usually focused on managing the overall game and strategy for the team and can’t focus on all aspects. Usually, teams will have an assistant coach that focuses on special teams (power play and penalty kill) and an assistant that focuses on the defence who runs the different pairings.
