18 jersey number in cricket

In today’s world cricket has achieved the status of the second most popular sport after football. When a player debut their career, they are given a cap, which shows that the player has become a particular number’s player for that country. In the same way a cricket player bears a jersey which has a number on its back side.

Virat Kohli

Virat Kohli is an Indian international cricketer and former captain of the India national cricket team. He’s known for playing with Delhi in domestic cricket and Royal Challengers Bangalore in the Indian Premier League as a right-handed batsman. He is often considered one of the best batsmen of his era and some critics believe him to be one of the best limited-overs batsmen in history. Between 2013 and 2022, he captained the India cricket team in more than 200 matches across all three formats. Kohli is one of the most successful test captains in Indian cricket history.

Kohli made his Test debut in 2011. He reached the number one spot in the ICC rankings for ODI batsmen for the first time in 2013. He has won Man of the Tournament at the ICC World Twenty20. He also set the world record of being the fastest to 23,000 international runs.

Kohli has been the recipient of many awards – most notably the Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy (ICC Men’s Cricketer of the Decade); Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy (ICC Cricketer of the Year); ICC Test Player of the Year; ICC ODI Player of the Year and Wisden Leading Cricketer in the World. At the national level, he was awarded the Arjuna Award, the Padma Shri under the sports category and the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award, the highest sporting honour in India.

He is ranked as one of the world’s most famous athletes by ESPN and one of the most valuable athlete brands by Forbes. In 2018, Time magazine named him one of the 100 most influential people in the world. In 2020, he was ranked 66th in Forbes list of the top 100 highest-paid athletes in the world for the year 2020 with estimated earnings of over $26 million.

Kohli is a naturally aggressive batsman with strong technical skills. He usually bats at the no.3 position in ODI cricket. He bats with a slightly open-chested stance and a strong bottom-hand grip. He is not a big hitter and plays more grounded shots. He is known for his wide range of shots, ability to pace an innings and batting under pressure. He is strong through the mid-wicket and cover region. He has said that the cover drive is his favourite shot, while also saying that the flick shot comes naturally to him. He does not play the sweep shot often, being called “not a natural sweeper of the cricket ball”. Kohli is strong on leg stump line bowling. If bowled at leg stump he plays flick shot.

According to cricket pundit VVS Laxman, for Virat Kohli, balling line outside the off stump is his weakness. He got out many times by outside off stump line ball and opposition team’s bowlers tries to exploit his weakness in Test as well as ODIs. Out swinging balls are one of his weaknesses as per Richard Hadlee. Cricket pundit and former India Cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar feels the same that offside off stump line is his weakness.

His teammates have praised his confidence, commitment, focus and work ethics. Kohli is also known to be a “sharp” fielder.

Kohli is regarded as the best limited-overs batsman in the world, especially while chasing. In ODIs, he averages around 69 in matches batting second as opposed to around 51 batting first. Most of his ODI hundreds have come in run-chases and he set the record for most hundreds batting second.

Kohli is noted for his on-field aggression and was described in the media as “brash” and “arrogant” during his early career. He has got into confrontations with players and umpires on several occasions. While many former cricketers have backed his aggressive attitude, some have criticised it. In 2012, Kohli had stated that he tries to limit his aggressive behaviour but “the build-up and the pressure or the special occasions make it tough to control the aggression”.

Kohli is often compared to Sachin Tendulkar, due to their similar styles of batting, and sometimes referred to as Tendulkar’s “successor”. Many former cricketers expect Kohli to break Tendulkar’s batting records. Kohli has stated that growing up Tendulkar was his idol and role model and that as a kid he “tried to copy the shots Tendulkar played and hit sixes the way he used to hit them”. Former West Indies great Vivian Richards, who is regarded as the most destructive batsman in cricket, stated that Kohli reminds him of himself. In early 2015, Richards said Kohli was “already legendary” in the ODI format, while former Australian cricketer Dean Jones called Kohli the “new king of world cricket”. Aakash Chopra, an Indian commentator, stated that “Sachin had more shots as compared to Virat”.

Moeen Ali

Ali plays as an all-rounder, batting left-handed and bowling off spin.

Trent Boult

Trent Alexander Boult is a New Zealand international cricketer known for playing as a bowler for Northern Districts in New Zealand’s domestic cricket, and New Zealand internationally.

He is a left-arm fast-medium opening bowler and a right-handed batsman, Boult made his Test debut for New Zealand in December 2011 and his One Day International debut the following July. He was the joint leading wicket taker at the 2015 Cricket World Cup. In November 2018, he became the third bowler for New Zealand to take a hat-trick in ODIs, while in June 2019, Boult became the first bowler for New Zealand to take a hat-trick in the Cricket World Cup.

Boult is a left-arm fast medium swing bowler who makes up for his relative lack of height with deceptive pace and the ability to swing the ball both ways. Boult’s primary weapon is the inswinger to the right-hander. Perhaps unsurprisingly, his childhood cricketing hero was Wasim Akram. In 2013, in a radio interview, former New Zealand captain Jeremy Coney rated Boult as New Zealand’s best bowling discovery since Shane Bond. He is also known to haul in one-handed catches with either hand, both in Basin Reserve. In 2014, he became the 4th test bowler since Richard Hadlee, Chris Martin and Iain O’Brien to claim 30+ wickets in consecutive years. He has developed a good opening bowling partnership with Tim Southee, having taken a big percentage of all wickets between them, especially since the retirement of Martin. In Tests, they are ably complemented by Neil Wagner’s short left-arm seam deliveries. In August 2019, in the series against Sri Lanka, Boult became the third bowler for New Zealand to take 250 wickets in Test cricket.

Faf du Plessis

Francois “Faf” du Plessis is a former South African professional cricketer and former captain of the South Africa national cricket team. He is considered as one of the best fielders in the world. He was named as the South African Cricketer of the Year in 2019. He also became the captain of Royal Challengers Bangalore in the Indian Premier League.

He is a right-handed batsman and part-time leg spin bowler. He is one of the most successful International captains in history with a winning percentage of 73.68 in ODIs. He is the first International Captain to defeat Australia in Australia in all three formats of the game. du Plessis is the first South African Captain to defeat Australia in both Home and Away test series and he did that back to back in 2016 and 2018. In 2016, he became the first International Captain to defeat Australia 5-0 in a five-match series whitewash.

He played South African domestic cricket for Northerns and the Titans, as well as matches for Lancashire County Cricket Club, Chennai Super Kings, Rising Pune Supergiant, and Royal Challengers Bangalore in the Indian Premier League.

He made his ODI debut against India in January 2011 and scored a 60 runs, and made his Test debut in November 2012, becoming the fourth South African to score a Test century on debut. After making his T20 debut in September 2012, he was subsequently also named T20 captain of South Africa for the following Twenty20 series against New Zealand and confirmed full-time skipper in February 2013.

du Plessis took over the Test captaincy in December 2016 and assumed full-time captaincy in all formats of the game in August 2017 after teammate and former captain AB de Villiers relinquished the two limited overs captaincies. In February 2021 he announced his retirement from Test cricket in order to focus on the 2021 and 2022 ICC Men’s T20 World Cups.

Shoaib Malik

Shoaib Malik is a Pakistani cricketer known for playing with the Pakistan national cricket team and Peshawar Zalmi in the Pakistan Super League (PSL). He was the captain of the Pakistan national cricket team from 2007 to 2009. He made his One-Day International debut in 1999 against the West Indies and his Test debut in 2001 against Bangladesh. On 3 November 2015, he announced his retirement from Test cricket to focus on 2019 Cricket World Cup. On 2 July 2018, he became the first male cricketer to play 100 T20Is. On 5 July 2019, he announced his retirement from One Day International cricket after Pakistan won their last group stage game against Bangladesh at Lord’s at the 2019 Cricket World Cup.

Shoaib Malik took over 150 ODI wickets, and has a batting average in the mid-30s in both Test and ODI cricket. His bowling action came under scrutiny (particularly his doosra) but he had elbow surgery to correct this. Malik was ranked second, behind teammate Shahid Afridi, in the ICC ODI all-rounder rankings in June 2008. In March 2010, Malik received a one-year ban from international cricket from the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB); the ban was overturned two months later. On 13 September 2017, Malik became the highest run-scorer in T20I for Pakistan. On 1 July 2018, Malik also became the first Asian batsman to score 2,000 runs in T20Is, and third overall and first player to play 100 T20Is in the world.

In August 2018, during the 2018 Caribbean Premier League tournament, he became the fourth batsman to score 8,000 runs in T20s.

On 10 October 2020, in the 2020-21 National T20 Cup, Shoaib Malik became the first Pakistani batsman to score 10,000 runs in Twenty20 cricket, doing so in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s match against Balochistan.

According to Cricinfo’s Osman Samiuddin, Malik’s batting repertoire doesn’t burst forth with strokes; there remains a distinctly utilitarian appeal to it. His drives straight are generally checked, dispossessed of flourish and in his forward defensive prods, there is an exaggerated care, just to make fully sure. It doesn’t mean elegance doesn’t come to him, as a couple of cover drives off Anil Kumble and Harbhajan Singh to bring Pakistan nearer its hundred showed. Midwicket slogging also comes naturally to him, usually more effective than beautiful.

Malik is regarded as a flexible player. He is capable of hitting big shots but is also capable of rotating the strike with good placement. He has a strike rate of 80.4 runs per 100 balls, which compares favourably to players such as Rahul Dravid and Inzamam ul-Haq. His most brazen display of “power hitting” came in 2003 against South Africa when he scored 82 from 41 balls. As is required of most modern players, he also has displayed good defensive batting at times. With Shoaib Malik Pakistan has become first country to have four batsman in T20I who have scored more than 1,500 runs. These are Umar Akmal, Mohammad Hafeez, Babar Azam and Shoaib Malik. He is one of the leading Run scorers for Pakistan in T20 internationals with more than 2,000 Runs.
