Charge
How to understand the basketball expression “charge”?
What is the definition of a charge in basketball?
What does a “charge” stand for?
A charge is a term used in basketball to describe a colliding offense with the opponent’s defensive player who’s being stationary. The defensive player has to be stationary before the offensive player gets them. A charge foul is usually being called for when the offensive player loses the ball in possession, while the player who was charged with a foul will have a count of personal foul and turnover on their record. On the other hand, when the offensive player shoots the ball while committing a charging foul, then no score will be counted.
Charging is considered as a difficult call in basketball. If the defensive player didn’t implant their feet firm on the floor or didn’t execute a stationary position, then they will be called off with a blocking foul. The basketball referee should determine a close split-second to witness if it’s charging or blocking foul, or to which player made the first contact against another player. In NBA and Euroleagues, the defensive player has to be four feet from the basket, or else, it will be considered as a blocking foul. It’s also true when players need to be set by setting their torso directly.
According to the NBA Rulebook, if the offensive player made physical contact with a defensive player with a stationary position, then no points will go to the player in possession. At the same time, the defensive player has to make a movement to protect themselves too, however, they are not allowed to submarine the attacking player. This only means that they have to be in a specific position where they can make a charge without giving themselves another foul. The defender also has to pave space for the dribbler for them to easily swift a direction.
There have been a lot of changes because of the growth and progress basketball has made. Because of these changes, the NBA decided to control the players by limiting them into standing underneath the basket. This is to avoid physical accidents and prevent them from hanging below the basket. This will make the defensive players establish themselves outside the circle to draw a charge.
