Replay review
The manager or umpire can initiate the check of one or more plays during the game. These plays come under review. But differently from NBA or NHL, the replay at the venue is impossible.
All episodes come to the Replay Command Center, one of the Major League Baseball Headquarters in New York. The replay officials – full-time umpires – who are on their shifts, check the episode from different angles and tell their decision whether to keep the officials’ decision or change it. This approach is critical because it avoids the possible gerrymanders from the home or visiting team’s side.
The officials from New York City have two nminutes to inform their colleagues on the field about their decision. If a replay review alters a previously made call on the field, the replay official must use their judgment to position both teams as they would have been if the original call had been accurate. Their decision is final and everybody who argue the review outcome must leave the baseball park immediately. The overturned decision nullifies all incorrect calls and scores after that moment.
The crew chief can initiate the calls of possible home runs. Beginning from the eighth inning, it takes the right to initiate all reviewable episodes upon its initiative or on request of the side without challenges.
