Pound the batter inside
Pitchers use pitches that are near to the hitter, on the inside area of the plate, as a method known as “pounding the batter inside” in baseball. Limiting the hitter’s range of motion, this strategy can make it more difficult for them to achieve a solid swing. The pitcher’s goal in throwing inside and tight pitches is to jam the hitter, making it harder for them to make solid contact and, ultimately, hit the ball hard. Pitchers employ this strategy to test batters where they are most comfortable, throw off their timing and mechanics, and generally make a statement about who’s boss.
