PFP
What is PFP in baseball?
Is this list the excessive one?
Can we conclude the pitcher’s role in the game?
The PFP is the abbreviation of the pitchers fielding practice. It’s a complex of drills to perfect the bunts, throw the pitches, and other required skills. Want to become a pitcher or love baseball? Here are some examples of that.
3 in 1 pick
It aims to practice pitch techniques and boost the reps in a short time. The exercise involves the fielders practicing in proper timing.
The execution of the drill is as follows:
- Pivot or jump step from the stopped position or quick move with hands hit together in a preliminary position towards the first base
- reverse pivot in the direction of the shortstop and second baseman. Further spin move to reach the second base
- combination of pick-off and 31 play to reach the third base. The first part involves the third baseman, right and left-hand pitchers.
Drill time takes up to 15 minutes.
3 in 1 bunt
The exercise suggests teaching how to field the bunts without problems. Also, it creates the possibility of working out the approaches required to stop the runner in these conditions.
The instruction for the exercise with three pitchers:
On the initial command go, the pitchers feint the throwing position and follow thru it. Then the catchers roll the balls for proper bunt placement after the second go command. Pitchers rotate each time after somebody fields the bunt.
- We make dozens of free sports predictions every day.
The techniques involve fielding the bunt, stepping back in, and throwing to the first base for pitcher number 1. The second one fields the bunt by its predecessor, crow hops, and throws to second base. The third pitcher sends the ball to the third base. This practice takes 10 to 12 minutes. It’s suitable for indoor and outdoor sessions.
3-1, 4-1 covering the first base
This drill trains the concentration of the pitcher and methods to prevent the batter-runner from arriving at the first base. It also powers the consistency to the distractions from the batter’s side.

Instructions for the drill:
- The fungo hitters throw the ball to the 1B and 2B.
- Place a batter-runner about 25 feet up the baseline. Let it run close to the pitcher and do anything to distract the opponent.
This exercise takes 6-8 minutes. It can cover such occurrences as:
- The runner trying to advance to second from the first or score starting on second in the 3-1 play
- New predictions for soccer, tennis, hockey, basketball, etc. are created every hour.
- Normal 3-1 performance
- 4-1 or 4-3 flow
- Roller 3-1 or vice versa
Come-back drill
This exercise trains pitcher’s protection skills and fielding their position. The examples can be:
- Counteraction to bunt without runner(-s) on base(-s). The shine burner follows the come-backer.
- Runner on first and a sacrifice bunt, come-backer happens on the steal
- Two runners on the first and second bases. Be ready for the come-backer at the right pitcher’s side
- The runners arrive on 1st and 3rd or load the bases. The come-backer and squeeze follow
The drill takes 12 minutes and consists of these steps:
- The pitchers may perform as position players. Alternatively, the infielders transform into the fielders
- The fungo hitter throws different bunts and come-backers at the pitcher.
- The positional player number 1 gets one rep, then rotates in the direction of each base and comes back to the line
Squeeze attempt bunt defense
This drill outcomes from the previous situation with loaded bases. It helps the pitchers to control these attempts better.

The drill techniques are:
- Use the step-back to determine the batter’s action
- Pitch out
- Pick off to the third base from the wind and set positions
- High fastball in the strike zone as the result of the slide step
The defensive actions in this 12-15 minute drill include:
- Fielding the bunt, look at the runner and throw to first
- After the but is fielded, toss the catcher at home
- If the runner scores at the field of the bunt moment, out it on the first base
- Field the bunt and get active runner down
- Defense of the double suicide squeeze
- Defensive first and third squeeze play.
Combination 3-1 drill
It covers nine typical situations and trains the pitchers to react to them. The procedure drills three situations by doing three at a time. Don’t exploit the steps you lack the technique skills.
The pitchers line in 3 lines. The fungo hitters throw the balls in the pitchers’ side. The pitchers must react together. Then they rotate lines.
- What can you bet on today? The answer is here.
The third fungo addresses the ball to the first baseman, who tosses it to the pitcher covering the first base. Pitcher must get to the baseline which is 20 feet ahead of that base. Then it catches the toss running inside the line. Tag the inside of the base, putting the right foot inside the base, step inside the left foot. Plant the right foot and turn to throw to the third base.
The fungo hitter 2 works with pitcher 2. The latter fields the ball, then takes a crow hop with the further throw to the second base. It’s the shortstop and second baseman’s zone of responsibility. Pitcher tights firm ¾ to turn and throw to the shortstop.

The first fungo hitter rolls the bunt in the direction of the third base. P3 charges and fields it, then makes the clockwise pivot and throws it to the third baseman who covers that base. All steps take 12 to 15 minutes.
Backing up base drill
The drill has the purpose of teaching the pitcher proper backup position, protecting itself from dead ball area.
- Follow the link and get your prediction before the match starts.
The drill passes as follows:
- The coach puts the bucket of balls in the center of the training zone (the center of the field) and throws the ball to the third base or home plate. The task of the pitcher is back up the throw.
- 3rd baseman reacts the ball under odd edges or deflects it to go through. It makes the pitcher scramble for it.
- Go to a bookmaker and place your bets right now.
- After the ball recovery, the pitcher goes to return it to the bucket. Finally, it returns to the mound area.
- After that, the next pitcher enters the game.
Six pitchers complete the exercise in 10-12 minutes.
Pitcher’s defensive reaction drill
This drill supposes training of the on-time reaction to different offense actions, especially ground balls. These may be:
- Free sports predictions 24 hours a day.
- Normal 3-1 play, its bobbled version, then holding the base
- Slow roller 3-1 or-1-1 with a call from the pitcher.
- Direct path to the 1st base during 3-6-1 or 4-1 play.
- Bunt to the 1st base line, including the inside move and outsidetechnique.

- Come-backers during 1-6-3, 1-4-3, 1-3 plays
- Sacrifice bunt is possible on 1-3, 1-4, 3-1, 3-4, 1-6, 4-6 plays

The mechanism of the drill is as follows:
- Pitch from the dirt area at ½ speed. Isolate the desirable mechanical points for concentration.
- The control here isn’t important. Just hit the wall and work on the appropriate fielding.
- Finish in the affordable position, then put the glove out in front of the body.
- Field the come backers. The last step is the feet organization, crow hop and throws to basemen in the free mode.
- Pitcher is on the mound, while the catcher is on the plate. The balls are 20 feet from the plate in the third base area.
- We make dozens of free sports predictions every day.
- The coach rolls the ball behind the catcher. The pitcher needs to cover the home plate with a break. Catcher delivers the ball to the teammate.
- When the pitcher is ready to throw, it rolls the ball to that third base line over the plate. The pitcher needs to tag it, then jumps to avoid the collision, ready to throw to the next base.
