The field manager is the head coach who oversees and makes the final decisions of the on-field team strategy, lineup selection and training. It has a couple of assistant coaches with specialized responsibilities like first- or third-base coach, pitching manager, etc. These managers usually don’t have the off-field, promotion or long-term duties. The planning, off-field and personnel questions are the treat by the general manager. The field manager surrenders the general manager as well.
It builds the batting order and chooses the starting pitcher for the game. The National League field managers also designate the hitter if their team is hosting the game. All managers have the right to inform the pitcher about the desired pitch, change players on positions depending on the situation. Some field managers act as the base coach to be closer to the playing area. In that case, the assistant coach takes place in the dugout.
Most professional teams’ field managers were baseball stars. They were perfect catchers, pitchers, basemen. The cases when amateurs become the MLB field managers are rare. These people coach school or college teams as well.
